Adrenal Building Recipe

Just as we began our workshop with movements that quieted the wood/liver energies, this soup begins with some very soothing liver herbs and ingredients. Our adrenals cannot be calmed and nourished if our nervous system and liver are agitated.

These ingredients nourish the liver:

One bunch of organic cilantro
3 tablespoons of wispy tips of dark green fennel
3 stalks of organic celery with leafy tips

These ingredients nourish the yin:
4 medium organic carrots (this also nourishes the earth to support the metal)
1 can of organic black beans in a non-BPA can (EDEN brand low or no sodium)
1 can of red organic kidney beans in a non-BPA can (EDEN brand low or no sodium) 1 cup of sprouted mixed variety dry lentils (black, orange and brown)

This ingredient nourishes the metal–the metal nourishes the water or adrenals by creating the container to store and hold adrenal energy:

Small cauliflower cut into large chunks

Seasonings:
2 tablespoons coconut oil (or any favorite healthy cold pressed organic oil)

1 tablespoon roasted garlic
1 large yellow onion cut fine
2 32 oz boxes of Central Market or Pacific Organic Low Sodium Vegetable broth
2 teaspoons Himalayan pink salt (or to taste)
1 tsp curry powder
1 tsp Organic chinese spice blend (cumin, curry, anise, fenugeek)

Optional: (Slice a large kombu sheet into 1 inch squares and put in a cheesecloth). Add to soup during the last 20 minutes of cooking to extract the kombu essence. Remove cheesecloth before serving. Kombu nourishes the kidneys and adrenalssince it is from the sea.

Optional: Add cup of ground chia seed for extra protein during the last hour of cooking. Stir well. You may need to add more liquid.

Optional: You can also put the soup ingredients into a base of bone broth if you are working to rebuild bone density.

In a large skillet, add the coconut oil and heat pan. Add the onion and garlic then brown until carmelized. Add the celery, carrots (chopped into about sized chunks each), and cauliflower. Add the fennels diced. Add curry powder, Chinese seasonings. Cook until vegetables are braised.

In a large strainer, strain the juices from the beans and rinse beans well. Add fresh cilantro and tear the leaves and massage the cilantro into the beans. The tearing of the cilantro releases the essential oils of this beautiful herb which is deeply detoxifying.

Meanwhile, begin heating the vegetable broth.

Add braised vegetables and bean cilantro mix into hot vegetable broth and add any remaining seasonings. Bring to boil, then simmer for 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. The flavor deepens the longer you simmer as well as the constituents of the herb vegetables release more deeply.

Serve with gluten free crackers or pretzels, and/or fresh salad.
