How to Create Holiday Gifts from the Heart that are Affordable, Meaningful and Soul-Based

Instead of reaching for the materialistic solution, try reaching for creativity this holiday season with home made gifts that are from the heart and that warm the heart.

When you take the time to create something, it puts a little bit of your spirit into whatever the gift is–so that you are part of the present versus buying some mass produced item.

It is also economical and avoids fueling energy excessive financial expenditures during the holiday season, freeing yourself to invest that money in ways that can help improve the world.

Here are two ways you can create gifts that are deeply meaningful and communicate how much you care.

(1) Create experiential gifts that show your loved ones that you appreciate them and that draw you closer.

A wonderful holiday gift might be to create an evening or special holiday “date” time to spend with someone that you adore, special friends or family. It might be as easy as creating a beautiful lunch or dinner at home, taking time to burn your friend’s or sweetie’s favorite music, and just being totally present to enjoy the meal and music together.

If friends have young children, it might be a special play date time nourishing both parent and child.

Or invite a loved one on a beautiful wintry hike and take care to mindfully leave the world of stress behind. Invite your friend to fully immerse in your company and the surroundings. Parks are usually sparsely attended this time of the year, so it’s a great time to enjoy state and county parks that otherwise might be hectic and busy. In the central Texas area, places such as Hamilton Pool, or Garner State park provide serene experiences of still water pools and flowing rivers with changing autumn leaves still present.

Rent a favorite DVD that has moved you emotionally and share that with a friend. Music concerts on DVD are also a wonderful choice to create that special time at home to share with friends or family as music has the effect of boosting serotonin and helping people fight off the winter blues. Attending the myriad of live and free music events in the Austin area is also wonderful experience to share.

Sign up for volunteer work with a friend. One of the best holiday “dates” I experienced was helping a beloved pass out Christmas gifts at the New Horizons orphanage in west Texas. What a delight to watch the surprised expressions as these children, normally forgotten during the holidays, received the attention, love and holiday wishes from a whole community of people who cared enough to donate time and items to the youth. If you’re interested in donating this year, get in touch with physics teacher, Mr. Khan, one of the primary organizers of this bountiful community work. The north Texas and Dallas communities are attempting to adopt ten of the children’s houses in terms of providing the houses with supplies and educational materials.

(2) Create some hand made gifts with the talents you have. You don’t have to be an artist to be artistic. If you like to sketch, draw, or create crafts, this is the time to use those talents to create hand made presents such as:

  • Handmade greeting cards with personalized words.
  • A piece of art that you personalize just for that special someone.
  • A hand made book of your prose or poetry.
  • Warm and fuzzy scarves or pillows for the home if you knit or crochet. You don’t? Why not learn some simple stitches? It’s a great way to relax and learn something new.
  • Hand made yummies to eat that are healthy. This Health.com site has some wonderfully simple yet healthy recipes. Jump in and bake a batch of cookies and have some fun decorating paper boxes (the kind that Chinese food comes in), available at craft stores to present your culinary gifts.

It’s so interesting how the energy changes when you shift your attention away from the thought of, “Okay, what do I have to buy for all my loved ones during the holidays,” to “What can I create from my heart to share with those I care about during the holidays?” It brings the joy and true meaning of the season back home.
