In these times of economic challenge, people often wonder about how to effectively invest their financial resources.

Yet, people often overlook the value of investing in their body, mind and spirit integration as a way of building prosperity.

When we nourish and integrate these three integral parts of self, body, mind and spirit, it magnifies our ability to align ourselves with God’s blessings and abundance.

These three strategies can help you invest in yourself each hour of the day.

Body

Integrate the gentle movements of Chinese yoga every hour for five minutes and you will find that your energy levels are higher, stress is lower, and that aches and pains diminish significantly.

Feed your body nourishing whole foods with plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats.

Invest in regular bodywork, acupressure, chiropractic adjustments to keep your body fine tuned. People often ask me how I keep my body so fit and tone at the age of forty-six. In addition to Chinese yoga and tai chi, I go for maintenance bodywork sessions at least once a month.

Mind

Chinese yoga and tai chi create a process of moving meditation that helps you to focus your mind and develop clarity.

We know the importance of a positive mind-set to success. All it takes is an investment of five to ten minutes, several times a day, with mindfulness training (breathing deeply while focusing on positive affirmations and self-talk) to help condition our brains to a state of alpha waves, the state associated with deep peace, clarity and bliss.

When we engage in this positive self-talk regularly, self esteem improves, clarity around our goals and what we wish to achieve improves, and our ability to manifest prosperity increases.

Spirit

When we move our bodies through the postures of Chinese yoga and tai chi with an understanding that each movement is a prayer connecting us to the Lord’s divinity, then our spirits grow and we experience a true integration of our human forms with our spiritual forms.

This weekend in Austin, Texas, the city will celebrate Free Day of Yoga with over 200 free classes city wide. Come and experience Chinese yoga taught in an integrative and prayerful way on Sept. 6th labor day at my office at 3355 Bee Caves Road, Building 7, Suite 705.

I will offer sitting qi gong movements meditations for detoxification at 8 am and at 1 pm. It is wonderful opportunity to invest in your body, mind and spirit and learn new tools to integrate all aspects of yourself for success.

Yet, many people stuff these feelings deep inside and ignore them, without realizing that the vibration or energy of these feelings can impact mental, physical and spiritual health.

If you are someone that is always on the go and find it difficult to focus on any one thing for very long be it an exercise program, dietary strategies, or even tasks within your work or daily life, then you might be someone who is using a hectic pace of life to avoid processing shadow emotions.

A clue that you may be using activity to suppress feelings is that shadow feelings and negative thoughts arise when you allow yourself down time–or you find yourself excessively tired when you slow down.

It takes adrenaline to suppress feelings, yet when you slow down, the adrenaline levels drop. The impact of moving through life with an adrenaline rush is that while it may insulate you from challenging emotions by spurring you into action, it may also exhaust your adrenal glands, thyroid and play a role in high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Chinese yoga (qi gong) can be an effective tool to integrate into daily life, to purge shadow emotions which also play a role in conditions of toxicity such as cancer, chronic illness or pain, and depression.

Chinese Yoga Builds Awareness of Emotional States

Chinese yoga creates a deeper awareness of our emotional layers. Awareness is the first step in healing shadow emotions and releasing them. Often times, these shadow layers may be held physically in the body resulting in extra weight especially around the stomach and waist.

Chinese yoga breath work (dao yin) encourages us to slow down our breath and thoughts, so that we may come into awareness of the emotions we are storing, and begin processing and releasing them.

Listen to the emotional release Qi Gong breath work that takes less than five minutes to perform

Some people start to feel impatient, anxious, frustrated, restless, or irritable when they are asked to deepen their breath. Those sensations are windows into our emotional reactivity and give us information about how we may be responding to experience on a unconscious level.

Similarly when asked to perform qi gong movements, people may tend to rush through the movements, as opposed to lingering and allowing themselves to notice the emotional sensations that occur when the body is moving. So, qi gong can be very helpful to developing an awareness of feelings and connecting emotions to the physical states.

Chinese Yoga Movements Release Emotions Associated with Specific Organs

In the Chinese medicine system, emotions are associated with specific organs.

Lungs: Perseverance/grief/sadness.

Heart: Joy or overexcitation.

Spleen: Centeredness/calmness or anxiety.

Liver: Compassion or anger/frustration.

Kidneys: Courage and will/discipline or fears.

I teach a set of qi gong movements that gently target each of these organs with soft twists of the body and slow arm and leg movements combined with breathing.

These movements can be performed in as little as two to three minutes and interspersed throughout the day to help you liberate and process layers of feelings. When performed regularly, this type of prescriptive qi gong can be a valuable tool in place of or as a complement to traditional psychotherapy or drug therapies.

For example, a recent study conducted at the University of California school of medicine found that individuals suffering from depression, who were over the age of 60, experienced greater effects from their anti-depressant medications, when they were taught a simple set of tai chi.

Qi Gong (Chinese yoga)as the mother art of tai chi is an even easier art to learn, yet is as equally as powerful in terms of impacting psychological states positively.

To encourage people to use the tool of Chinese yoga to process feelings, Westlake Well Being along with Aiki Healing will offer a free emotional detoxification class of qi gong on Sept. 6, Labor Day from 8 to 9 am and again at 1 pm to 2 pm at 3355 Bee Caves Road, Building 7 First Floor in Austin, Texas.

Sunsets are a wonderful opportunity to linger over all the moments in your day for which you are grateful, and prepare to embrace the yinness (softness, darkness) of the night.

If you usually exercise in the morning, try switching to the evening time to perform Chinese yoga (qi gong), tai chi or other forms of energy healing exercises.

As you gaze upon the setting sun, inhale slowly and raise the arms slowly to the sides with palms up as you reach above the head to grab an imaginary ball of warm, sunset energy.

Exhale as you drop the arms in front of your body as if moving that imaginary ball of sunset energy through the body, down the legs and out the feet.

Perform this movement three times.

Next, inhale through the nostrils consciously filling through the lower abdomen for a slow count of nine.

Hold for a count of five.

Exhale deeply through the nostrils, consciously contracting the lower abdomen as you push the air out of the lungs.

Perform this breath work three times.

As you continue to watch the sun set, observe the changing frequencies of color as the skies shift shades of orange.

Place your hands on your spleen, beneath the left rib cage, and imagine all the shades of red and orange nourishing the spleen and grounding your energy.

Feel the warmth from your hands, flooding inward.

Continue to stand and watch the sunset, feeling an infusion of peace and warmth increase.

Once the sun has set, gently perform Chinese yoga circle walking by walking in a heel toe pattern for a count of 28 steps in a circle, reverse directions and do the same in the other direction.

Hands should be placed, palm over palm facing inward on the abdomen, about an inch or two below the belly button.

Breathe through your nostrils deeply and fully, contracting the abdomen as you exhale and allowing the oxygen to fill up all the way down to your stomach when you inhale.

Walk in the circle (both directions) for a total of nine times.

As you walk, bring your mind to each step and consciously focus on the sensation of your foot rolling from heel to toe as you shift weight as you walk.

Consciously relax your knees and shoulders.

For each circle you make with 28 steps, you may wish to use a mantra or self talk affirmation to create even more positive energy. Examples include:

“I give myself a healthy and fit body.”

“I am grateful for (fill in the blank).”

“I am filled with love, warmth and empowerment.”

“I give myself the gift of peace and connection to earth.”

“I manifest my deepest desires and dreams in this moment.”

“I am loved and safe.”

As you finish your last circle and mantra, stand with hands still on the lower abdomen, and consciously store the wonderful evening energy by imagining this sunset energy flooding inward and calming you for the evening time activities.

Chinese yoga or qi gong (pronounced chi kung), is a powerful way to release the dampness and heat that summer time brings.

Dampness and heat are states that can lead to health issues such as excessive weight, chronic fatigue, aggravation of inflammatory conditions, depression, anxiety, and digestive challenges.

What causes dampness and heat?

Cold and iced beverages stagnates the energy of the spleen, creating dampness.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures causes the body to want to put out the fire by producing dampness, mucus or phlegm. Thus, on very hot days, we may feel sluggish, heavy and uninspired to move our bodies.

Internal and chronic diseases such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, depression, diabetes, congestive heart failure and kidney disease may also create dampness and heat.

Antibiotics and steroidal medications can create heat and dampness as well.

Chinese yoga or qi gong can help to release damp stagnation of the spleen, improve metabolism and clear heat.

Self Massage

Exhale deeply and take a deep breath in, filling in through the lower abdomen.

Visualize the energy of the spleen, residing under the left rib cage.

Feel into the areas that are gray and heavy with your mind. Notice the areas that are light and dry also.

Lightly slap the area under the left rib cage with the open palm of your right hand, and brush any stagnant energy down the body, legs and out the feet. This helps to release stuck energy and improve blood flow to the spleen.

Perform this movement 9 times several times during the day.

In Chinese medicine, the spleen is said to be the transformer of not only foods, but also life experience. Thus, when we are “stuck” in our lives, often times there is dampness in the spleen holding patterns and creating a challenge with letting go of harmful habits.

From a soul perspective, we may carry also old injuries and emotional wounds from early childhood or prenatal (past life) experiences in our energy bodies. Thus, by working with the spleen, we empower ourselves to transform those wounds and heal deeply so that we can create new experiences from a healed space.

Spleen is also related to our ability to ground and center our energies, something that can be challenging to do when we are busy.

Yet, if we take just a few moments to perform Chinese yoga with the intention of empowering our spleens to root our energy, it can help us to be more productive and focused with the tasks at hand.

Last, dampness and heat sometimes relates to mental states such as anxiety and struggle. Thus, when we feel these emotional states, the energy of our spleens can become taxed.

Thus, our minds can influence the physical state of our spleen–as well, our physical state can influence our minds.

For example, if we eat heavy, oily foods, cold and raw foods, and drink cold beverages, this can create a stagnation in the spleen that may manifest as dampness, resulting in stuck thoughts that are obsessive in nature or the feeling of struggling with all that we have on our plates (i.e. heat).

Qi Gong Breathwork

Breath work can also help invigorate and liberate the spleen.

Exhale fully and deeply, deliberately contracting the low belly to expel all the air from your lungs.

Inhale deeply, allowing air to fill into the middle dan tien (the area under your rib cage) to flood the spleen with oxygen. As you do so, imagine yellow light filling the spleen.

Repeat the pattern of exhalation and inhalation nine times, consciously making each deeper fuller and longer.

When finished, sit for a moment and reflect. Be open to the insights that may come about where you may be holding patterns in your life, body and mind, and understand that with a constant practice of Chinese yoga and breathwork, you are empowered to liberate those patterns.

Often times, the stress of life and exposure to toxins in the environment can stress our lymphatic system.

In Chinese medicine, the lymphatic is most closely associated with the triple heaters or triple burners, which can be thought of as an irrigation system of energy that disperses qi to the internal organs. When this irrigation system is clear and free flowing, disease does not exist.

For a deep triple heater cleansing meditation, click here to listen to the audio meditation.

When the triple heaters are obstructed, we see challenges manifesting as swollen lymph glands, low energy, and low immunity.

On a spiritual level, the triple heaters relate to our constitution in terms of which organs receive a concentration of energy or qi.

For example, if more energy is dispersed to the spleen, we might have a life curricula that centers around being an “earth, spleen person.” This might mean our soul lessons relate more to setting appropriate boundaries, nourishing ourselves and others, and creating a home environment that inspires a grounded feeling or its opposition, the feeling of anxiety. Physical curricula around spleen might also involve strained or tight muscles, digestive challenges and issues that involve prolapse or bruising.

Imagine if our triple heaters are obstructed. The flow of energy from this natural passage way of energy may be altered, which then can alter our soul curricula.

For instance, instead of having more energy dispersed to the spleen, which might be our more natural pattern, suddenly we might find more energy dispersed to the liver, overstimulating this organ, and creating challenges involving blood pressure, anger, or strained ligaments or tendons.

Thus, when we cleanse and regulate the triple heaters with qi gong, acupressure and work with essential oils, we liberate our bodies not only on a physical level from toxins, but also free our spirits to engage a flow of energy that is more natural to our soul curricula.

You can liberate your triple heaters by reducing the level of refined carbohydrates in your diet, hydrogenated oil products, high fat products and caffeine. Include more leafy green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and plenty of fresh juice made from carrots, ginger, cucumbers, and fresh green herbs such as parsley and cilantro.

Also, liberate your triple heaters with a one hour qi emission session that will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and clear internally.

Call me at 512.468.6588 to schedule a session in my new, spa-like office amid the old oak trees in beautiful Westlake.

Brain Theories: Right Versus Left

When neuroscientist, Jill Bolte Taylor had a stroke that impacted the left side of her brain, she described an experience of nirvana and bliss that unfolded as her analytical self shut down and her intuitive right brain took over. See the 19 minutes expanded video of her experience.

So often, many of us move through our days with a left brain predominance such that our intuitive selves are not getting as much stimulation as our cognitive, logical selves.

The recent rise in individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and anxiety reflects this more left-brained orientation of the mind’s energy scattered in many directions as it tries to analyze experience as opposed to just being in experience and feeling it.

Also, the challenges that many people experience with being truly empathic and sensitive to the feelings of others, can have a root in an overactive left brain.

When we are busy analyzing what people are sharing with us instead of really listening to and experiencing the feeling content, we can completely miss the essence of what is being shared.

Thus, a gulf develops between where others are in their feelings, and our ability to hear and comprehend what is being shared. This gulf creates an energy of isolation rather than an energy of unity. Thus, an erosive energy can predominate professional and personal relationships when such a gulf is present.

Since the right side of the brain is more closely associated with alpha, feeling and meditative states, we are more empowered to exhibit deeper states of empathy and harmony in our relationships when we come from a right brain state.

For example, when constructive feedback is offered from a place of love, a person who is listening more from the right brain, will hear the love and positive feelings associated with the feedback and respond positively.

However, a person who is filtering more through the left brain may only hear, “You are doing something wrong,” and may react defensively as if being attacked. Often times, they will not hear the accompanying love, kindness, and joy in the message. Thus, instead of responding positively, they may respond with argumentative energy or withdraw and shut down.

Yet, by training ourselves to access more of our right brain, we can empower ourselves to experience the feeling content of what is shared in more positive ways so that we understand the complete context of communications and interactions.

The right brain also allows us to access trust by being present to the myriad of verbal and non-verbal cues present. We learn to sense into the energy and emotions of what is being shared so that our left brains do not have to wonder, “Gee, I wonder what that person meant by this or that.” It takes the guess work out of interactions, and also allows us the space to ask for clarifications with an openness to sensing into what is shared.

Qi Gong Breath Work Nourishes the Right Brain

Dao yin breathwork, a form of qi gong breathing, is very effective in helping us shift out of our analytical selves and embrace more of our right brain feeling states. It is our feeling states rather than our analytical states that allow us to be in touch with our emotional patterning and also have empathy with others so that we can connect with other people from a heart space.

Listen and watch the 9 minutes dao yin meditation. If you enjoy it, please tweet or comment on our blog about it, and share with others.

Through focusing on breath work, we are able to quell the analytical mind slowly, and allow ourselves to silence the left brain for a short while. In the beginning, the mind drifts with breath practice, but over time, the mind becomes accustomed to letting go of thoughts and focusing on the pattern of breaths moving in and out the lungs. It is a simple yet powerful practice that aligns us with our more natural selves where our intuitive selves lead our souls to deepen what the logical brain experiences.

Dao yin can also help us to detoxify our spirits and bodies. By increasing oxygen, we naturally help to rid our bodies of physical toxins and also release negative emotional energies. Thus, dao yin can help us to face transition in our lives and embrace new experiences positively. Often times, people are stuck in states of regret, resentment, anger, or sadness such that they cannot imagine embracing or creating new experiences that are satiating. Thus, people can become energetically tethered to the negative aspects of experience.

When we perform dao yin breathing, we can consciously use our exhalations to cut the tethers to negative emotional states and understand that dwelling on such states does not change our circumstance or empower us to embrace new experiences. We can, through our breath, simply feel and then let go of grief, loss, frustration, and regret.

Often times, my clients comment on how sunny and bright my disposition is and wonder how to achieve that. I achieve that state by truly letting go of those things that do not serve my soul’s growth. Now, that is easier said than done, for it is never easy to let go of those things in our lives to which we have become attached. However, when one has a regular practice of dao yin breath work and meditation, it becomes easier to transform feelings of loss or sadness and shift from spaces of angst to places of joy and liberation.

I invite you to call me at 512.468.6588 to learn more about dao yin practices and schedule a private class.

What is your pattern of approaching new life experiences?

Do you welcome them with open arms and a smile and embrace the support and love in your life?

Or do you hesitate and look for obstacles and reasons for why something new will not work for you or hesitate to work with others to bring a new experience to a fruitful place?

All of us have comfort zones, but researchers find that stretching past comfortable zones trains us to:

1. Trust more fully and develop deeper levels of faith in ourselves and others.

2. Deepen relationships by acting as a co-creator of experiences by allowing ourselves to embrace the idea that we are interconnected. When we focus on that interconnectivity, we can leave our own egoic fears and perceptions to the side, to hear, see and experience the truth of others which allows us to align energies to create experiences together. Instead of “how will this best serve me,” the thought patterns become, “How will this best serve our common desires and needs?”

3. Create new grooves in our brains. Recent research shows that breaking habitual routines that do not serve us is not about getting rid of old brain grooves, but about forming new ones–giving our thought patterns new roads on which travel versus spending time trying to deprogram old patterns.

Think about that. Through the seventies and eighties, people were focused on the negative–undoing messages, programming and patterns. In the nineties, people began to discover that it’s not necessary to undo the impact of old experiences–that we can move forward in growth by simply and consciously choosing not to approach experience the same way because it is “what I am used to.” So ask yourself, “How many times am I engaging behaviors that are new and out of my pattern, and how many times do I engage certain behaviors that are coming from the place of ‘This is just what I usually do.’?”

4. Helps us to reduce stress by expanding comfort zones since stress is often the result of not having the internal resources to meet the unexpected. Yet, when we are used to welcoming the unexpected, we tend to be less reactive and stressed.

Affirmations can play an important role in expanding your capacity to co-create fulfilling new experiences.

Examples of affirmations include:

This relationship is mutually beneficial.

I am with a partner who is supportive, loving and works with me to co-create a wonderful life.

This relationship builds my strengths and allows me to grow my areas of challenge as I inspire my partner to do the same.

In this partnership or relationship, we create an experience that optimizes joy, profits, or business expansion for each one of us.

You can also phrase affirmations in terms of what will come:

I will engage a relationship that nourishes me and makes me smile, just as I nourish and make another smile.

I will partner with vibrant businesses and people.

I will meet a loving and supportive partner where we meet each other’s needs fully and joyfully.

By stating the affirmations and sharing them, it allows others to participate in this co-creation with you–to explore if their desires are aligned with what you wish to co-create. If you discover areas, where there is a mismatch between what you desire and what another person desires as co-creation, it does not mean you cannot co-create together, but it simply means there is a need to explore how to transform and align those areas that are not in harmony each other’s needs and desires.

In areas where they are not matching your affirmations, you can ask yourself, “How willing am I to put in the hard work to transform those areas–and how willing is the other person or company willing to do the same?” Both people must be equally committed in order for transformation and alignment to occur.

Of course, some people have fears and insecurities such that if they hear affirmations about what you hope to create and they do not perceive they are in the space to manifest those things, they quickly shut down, give up, or hear the expression of those desires and vision as a criticism of all the things they are not. Thus, they miss out an opportunity to be truly be open to stretching, growing and creating something really exciting and deep with others.

How Do You Co-Create with Others?

Trust other people. Let yourself be vulnerable to share candidly what your needs, desires and hopes are. Be real about your intentions.

Leave the perfectionist schema to the side. Situations or relationships do not have to be perfect in order to fulfill needs–they simply need to have the potential fulfill those needs and the commtiment of all parties to work diligently to co-creating an experience that works for all, not all of the time, but a significant portion of the time.

Give people the positive benefit of the doubt–assuming the best intentions and meanings in what others express instead of the worst. Positive projection furthers co-creation because it assumes that people are being nonjudgmental, open, willing to explore, listen and hear truths, and share candidly. On the other hand, negative projections assume that people are being judgmental, closed, not open to seeing many facets of situations or people, and lacking in transparency. Thus, negative projections are counterproductive to the process of co-creating prosperous experiences.

So next time you are faced with a new life experience, meet each new breath with a commitment to affirming and sharing your desires in a nonjudgmental way, leaving openness to stretch out of comfort zones to transform aspects of experience into a space more closely aligned with your intentions and affirmations. Trust that great rewards come from pushing past fears and that initial discomfort with something new.
